New Wellington city car park

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Thanks to our friends at Wilson Parking Cityhop, has a new park in the middle of Wellington.

The Bute/Garret Street car park is really close to Cuba St and Courtney Place and easy to access. It’s the very first bay on the left and is immediately visible when approaching Garrett St. When approaching from Bute St it is the last car on the right before exiting to Garrett.

Available 24 hours a day to members,  there is no excuse for not thinking about car share and saving money as well as doing something good for the envionment!

We had a new member tell us that his car lease was costing him $1200 a month, plus insurance of nearly $2000 a year plus registration, WOFs and servicing. That’s over $14k a year to give an impression -he only used it once a month.

Now he can cityhop and save money. It’s only $15 an hour up to $75 for 24 hours.

Thank you Wilson Parking for encouraging people to drive less, be more eco-friendly and cityhop car share when they need wheels. Wilson Parking are smart enough to realise they aren’t going to ruin their business by supporting car share.

There will always be some people who want to drive and park. However there are lots of others who use public transport and sometimes need a car for a few hours

Does everyone own a car?

Friday, April 16th, 2010

When you sit in a queue to get on to a motorway in Auckland it does seem as if everyone has a car. Believe it or not a lot of people don’t. More significantly it wasn’t that long ago when many people didn’t own a car.

Robin Chase, car share guru and founder of Zipcar has written an interesting essay on driving habits.

She writes 95 percent of American households own a car, and most Americans get to work by car (85 percent).

Into the late 1940s, many Americans did not own cars and probably even later in New Zealand. People lived in cities and towns, and 40 percent did not own cars but used public buses, trolleys, and trains. Soon after the war, a surge in low-cost, mass-produced houses occurred outside cities to accommodate  returning soldiers and their families as well as new migrants.

But things change-  in New York 100,000 people share 2000 cars. New Yrok has the lowest rate of car ownership – probably because it costs so much to own a car! The city is responding by creating safer, more liveable streets. It recently added bus lanes to streets.

Adds Robin, it is likely we will see a reduction in the number of car trips Americans take and a rise in the number of trips they take by foot, bicycle, public transit, or train. Car sharing will become common, and more people will take advantage of carpooling (many people sharing the same trip).

Embrace Life – best seatbelt reminder

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Instead of all the in your face blood, guts and gore New Zealand Land Transport advertisements that try to it seems unsuccessfully to  get drivers not to drink, or speed how about this kind of amazing ad.

This is how the Sussex Council in the UK reminded people to wear a seatbelt.

Cityhop reckons its far more memorable than the ads that make you feel sick! It reminds you so effectively of the people you are going to leave behind and hurt if you were in an accident. Very powerful.

Cityhop gets global partner

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Cityhop co-founder Victoria Carter is delighted to announce that Cityhop has its first global car share partner, GoGet car share in Australia.

As of today any Cityhop member can use a GoGet car when they are in Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide.

Check out www.goget.com.au/

Cityhop, NZ’s car share company and Go Get, Australia’s largest car share company are now global roaming partners. Cityhop car share members in New Zealand can use cars in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Go Get members can use Cityhop cars in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch without paying a membership fee.

Go Get was formed 7 years ago by friends Bruce Jeffreys and Nic Lowe. Five years later they won a Telstra NSW Business award. By then they had 5 staff, cars at more than 100 locations and 2000 members.

Today Go Get has 300 cars from Adelaide to Brisbane.

Just like cityhop, their typical members are city types who don’t need a car every day. Instead they are a car share club member. When they need a car they book on line or over the phone whenever they need a car and use a swipe card to access a clean car filled with gas that is permanantly parked in their neighbourhood. No  rego, insurance or maintenance worries.

If you are a cityhop member and are wanting to use car share in Oz, click on the link that will be on our website shortly.

Email feeling cues

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Writing eco-friendly  blogs can be a bit intense. When we reviewed the past few months there didn’t seem to be many light moments. So here is one!

Recently we came across this list of keyboard images to define your emotions! Did you know there were so many smilies? I am not a big fan of smilie faces in an email. I always feel when I’m asked something followed by a smilie face that somehow someone is trying to get me to like them. Just ask for what you want please.

For those who like smilies there is a range of smilies to describe feelings or the writer’s emotions.

We reckon it probably isn’t a good idea to use these in business emails or between work colleagues.

This Means This
:-) Smiley face
;-) Wink (light sarcasm)
:-| Indifference
:-> Devilish grin (heavy sarcasm)
8-) Eye-glasses
:-D Shock or surprise
:-/ Perplexed
:-( Frown (anger or displeasure)
:-P Wry smile
;-} Leer
:-Q Smoker
:-e Disappointment
:-@ Scream
:-O Yell
:-* Drunk
:-{} Wears lipstick

10 tips for eco-friendly driving

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Okay, so you can’t get out of your car yet, but what else could you do to drive a little less, and in an eco-friendly way? By not driving a car we can reduce pollution, congestion, improve health and fitness, save money, reduce accidents and create a more sustainable city. There are more cars than drivers in America and we’re not far behind!Given transport produces nearly a quarter of greenhouse gases what can we do individually? Here’s a list of 10 ideas.1. Plan better – ask yourself do I really need to make this trip? Is there an alternative mode of travel? 2. Could you walk? It’s amazing how much really is within walking distance of your house.  Not only will you get your errands done but you’ll be doing your body a favour. People who bike or walk more are often less stressed and happier than those who drive! 3. What about car share? Do you really need more than 1 car in your household? Could you get by with one car and get a car share membership for those trips when you really need a car? You’ll save money, see cityhop’s website for tips. 4. Buy a cleaner car – no not less dirty – but look for a smaller engine, perhaps or a car with low fuel consumption. 5. What about a manual car? They use less fuel and put less pressure on the brakes which means fewer particulates going into the air and waterways, the fish will thank you! 6. Slow down! Not only does it save fuel it’s safer! Aggressive driving will only get you to your destination a few minutes quicker! Is it worth it? 7. Keep your tyres inflated to the right pressure and keep your car serviced regularly – it saves fuel and lengthens the life of your car. 8. Travel light – Do you really need to carry your golf clubs, and all the other junk in your boot?  What about your roof rack? Take it off until you need it. This will conserve fuel. 9.  Start slowly and anticipate stops – yes you might feel like a  granny but if we all did not only would the roads be safer, you won’t waste fuel or waste your brakes  which means less pollution. 10. Go car free one day Try the bus, the train or see if someone from your office lives nearby so you can slowly start to change your habits. Finally, if you have to have a car buy the most fuel efficient model you can afford, practice some of the eco-driving tips, and when you can think about having a car less day!
