The waste of waste

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

There are so many people thinking about reducing waste and we at cityhop love reading more about people who think a bit like us!

Arthur Potts Dawson is a creative restaurateur who reckons that restaurants and supermarkets are the most unsustainable businesses anywhere. He’s  out to show it’s not necessary and he’s even creating a sustainable supermarket!

On TED he shares his personal vision for drastically reducing  waste in restaurants and supermarkets. He literally has thought of every aspect in his restaurant and how he can reduce waste. One can even order the volume of food one wants at his restaurant as part of his commitment to less waste.

In the TED clip  he explains his general idea of sustainability and how if something so wasteful as a restaurant can function 90% under it’s own power, from mental to kinetic, then the idea should be able to be moulded into different situations, locations, across the board.

Arthur says, it’s not possible to eliminate all waste but it is very possible to reduce it. He proves this with Acorn House and a new Project the Water house.

25 % of the world’s food is lost to wastage and with so many people starving it makes sense to do something about it. Had a look in your fridge!

Environmentally friendly businesses are possible and are important. If we reduce, re-use, and reduce and recycle then the world will be a much better place he reminds us!

Green your holidays -3 easy ways

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

People often say you need time to change habits. No better time to look at your eco-friendly habits and begin the change in your holidays. Start  the way you want to  continue your life.

1. If you have bought a ‘real’ tree then find somewhere that will recycle it and turn it into compost so it keeps living. Mt Gabriel has three places you can buy trees and you can return them to them for composting too. They will take your tree even if you didn’t buy it form them.

2. Give a cityhop car share membership. If you have a student in your house give them a membership and buy some hours so they can have wheels when they need them but not have the expense of a car. Think about what you are doing for the environment  by giving the gift of sharing too!

3. Buy local. While you are relaxing and have the time, check out your  local farmer’s market instead of the super market, and buy the freshest ingredients around.

Your ideas of greening the holidays welcome… post a comment.

Why the rich bike

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

We all know that a bike is an affordable way to move about and for this reason we might expect that it was the transport choice of those without a lot of ready cash.

However according to the Daily Mail, the bike is in fact becoming the transport method of choice for the rich, rather than those further down the earning ladder.

The article goes on, people on lower incomes may be more concerned with the need to earn money than worrying about what constitutes healthy living or about the issue of climate change and how cycling is the greenest option.”

We all know  London Mayor, Boris Johnson  and Prime Minister David Cameron cycle but the article also has pictures of Zara Philips (Princess Anne’s daughter) and even Penelope Cruz on their bike!

Cityhop has plenty of  members who bike and when they need a car they car share! You can live in the city without a car.
